Policies

These are the main policies on which the Liberal Democrats contested the last General Election:

The best schools for Somerset children

I believe every child should have the opportunity to realise their full potential and achieve their ambitions. The Liberal Democrats are investing more in our local schools than ever before. Somerset schools get above national average results in most tests and academic standards are rising. I want every pupil to benefit from inspiring teaching, modern classrooms and better discipline. I want Somerset’s schools to have the best and to be the best. The Liberal Democrat promise to parents is the commitment to put education first.

No student tuition fees or top-up fees

I believe young people should be able to attend university without the fear of massive debts. Labour promised not to introduce student tuition fees. They broke that promise. Debts of over £20,000 are a real concern for local students and their parents. The Liberal Democrats would make sure that academic considerations and not financial concerns are what count when young people decide to apply for university.

Free personal care when you need it

I believe we owe a huge debt to the generation that fought and worked to give Britain the freedoms and prosperity we enjoy today. The Liberal Democrats would introduce free personal care for pensioners who need it. No-one would be forced to sell their home in order to pay for care.

£25 more on pensions every week at 75

I believe every pensioner deserves dignity and security in their retirement. The Liberal Democrats would give Britain’s retired people a better deal. We would put an extra £25 per week on pensions for the over 75s and £33 more for couples. We would provide free local off-peak public transport for pensioners. We oppose unnecessary Post Office branch closures. We would introduce free personal care for pensioners who need it. And 90 per cent of pensioners would benefit from our commitment to scrap the unfair Council Tax.
